Quote of the Week from President Oaks' Life
"In the Hands of the Lord: The Life of Dallin H. Oaks" by Richard E. Turley Jr.:
"On February 3, 1963, … Elders LeGrand Richards and Howard W. Hunter of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles were in Chicago to divide the stake in which Dallin was serving as stake mission president. 'A few days before the division,' Dallin recalled, 'I had a strong impression that I would be called as the second counselor in the presidency of the new Chicago South Stake. Ascribing it to self-aggrandizement, I chastised myself for this impression, but it persisted. On the Saturday morning when the interviews were being held in Wilmette, I moped around the house in Elmhurst, puzzled and bruised that I had not been invited to participate.'
"Work had long been the medicine he took to reduce the aches and pains of life, and so, around 10:00 a.m., to salve his bruised feelings, he told June he was going to the university. He went into the garage to get into his car when he was unexpectedly called back into the house to take a phone call. The call was from someone at the stake center inviting him to come in for an interview with the apostles. Just as he had been prompted, they called him to be second counselor in the presidency of a new stake being split off from the old one."
Last Week’s Favorite Quotes
Clay's Favorite Quote: Too long to quote here, but I enjoyed President Oaks' stories in his September 29, 1981 BYU Devotional, "Revelation." He told of twice being spiritually helped to avoid professional embarrassment when just before submitting book manuscripts for publication, he felt something was wrong and was guided to find and incorporate new information into the books. Also, he says don't expect revelation if you pray over which brand of canned vegetables to buy! I highly recommend you check this one out.
Mitch's Favorite Quote: This quote comes from President Oaks' first General Conference address as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles ("Why Do We Serve?", October 1984 General Conference). The six reasons we serve that President Oaks shared caused me serious reflection on my motives, especially with what I'm doing with General Conference Applied! "What are some of the reasons for service? By way of illustration, and without pretending to be exhaustive, I will suggest six reasons. I will discuss these in ascending order from the lesser to the greater reasons for service. [1] Some may serve for hope of earthly reward. ... [2] Another reason for service—probably more worthy than the first, but still in the category of service in search of earthly reward—is that motivated by a personal desire to obtain good companionship. ... [3] Some may serve out of fear of punishment. ... [4] Other persons may serve out of a sense of duty or out of loyalty to friends or family or traditions. ... [5] One such higher reason for service is the hope of an eternal reward. ... [6] If our service is to be most efficacious, it must be accomplished for the love of God and the love of his children."
