Quote of the Week from President Oaks' Life
"In the Hands of the Lord: The Life of Dallin H. Oaks" by Ricard E. Turley Jr.:
"That had become his practice, and eventually became his motto: Work first, play later. It was a habit that would serve him well."
Take Action
Mitch's Application: "Despite the obvious importance of high academic standards, the standards set for you by your teachers and by the university are far less important than the standards you set for yourself. Your own pride and desire for improvement should not allow you to be comfortable with a level of performance in any area that is less than your best. Be your own severest taskmaster. The self-discipline and skills you acquire by this means will be far more important in the long run than the grades you receive, whether they are high or low." ("Challenges for the Year Ahead," BYU Devotional: September 6, 1973). I have identified specific ways in which I can become a more effective employee for my employer, and I have already started (and will continue) taking action.
Clay’s Application: “Rigorous standards and high achievement in any field of learning are not at odds with faith and devotion to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Strive for excellence, use the talents that the Lord has given you, meet and master the learning of men. … Nourish your spirit just as regularly as you nourish your body or mind.” (“Strive for Excellence,” Oct 1971). President Oaks was warning against neglecting your spirit, but implied is the need to also nourish your body and mind. I can do better about caring for my mental and physical health by exercising each day. Doing so will help me “strive for excellence” in what I do.
Your Application: Reply to this email and tell us how you'll take action on a prompting from one of the addresses you listened to last week. Let us know whether we can share your response in our newsletter, podcast, and/or on social media.
