Hello, Doer of the word!
*If you’d like to volunteer in helping us encourage more people to take action on inspired invitations from prophets and apostles, please reply to this email and let us know.*
Do you or someone you know have a story related to a conference talk or connection to the speaker? Reply and let's talk! We need all the help we can get to find podcast guests. We all have stories. Even if you don't think you're anyone special, your story may be exactly what another listener needs to hear!
Let's dive into the invitations from Elder John D. Amos' October 2025 General Conference address, "The Good News Recipe."
Invitations
1 - "Well, there we have it. The simple secret for happy living is to just follow God's recipe as detailed in the scriptures. I call it the 'Good News Recipe.'"
Application Idea: Study the Book of Mormon, specifically identifying precepts to abide by. I did this in 2025, and it was a delightful exercise. I created a notebook in the Gospel Library app called "Abide by the Book of Mormon's Precepts." For each precept I found, I highlighted it in a light blue color and added it to the notebook I had created. By the end of 2025, I had read the Book of Mormon cover-to-cover, and found 583 precepts to abide by! The Prophet Joseph Smith said: "I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book."
2 - "What do you do if something goes wrong when following the recipe? Well, embedded in the Good News Recipe is the 'secret ingredient' to ensure you always get it right in the end. The answer is always Jesus Christ. I think we all have moments when we feel our ingredients are not good enough, or we struggle to follow the directions, or perhaps we do something out of order, or something happens that is out of our control, and so on. What's the remedy? It's simply to add more of what invites Jesus Christ into your life."
Application Idea: In our podcast episode focused on Elder Amos' address, our guest, Kayla Shields, shared the following application idea that I would recommend to each of you: "I served as a Relief Society president a couple of years ago, and I made it my goal for a year to tie everything into our personal relationship with Jesus Christ. So every lesson that we taught, every activity that we had, everything that we did in Relief Society, we tied back to Jesus Christ. And this was at a point in my life where my marriage was really struggling, and it should have been really, really hard. And those years are some of the years that I had the most joy in my life."
3 - "As you follow the Good News Recipe for happy living, remember President Nelson's teaching: 'Whatever questions or problems you have, the answer is always found in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Learn more about His Atonement, His love, His mercy, His doctrine, and His restored gospel of healing and progression. Turn to Him! Follow Him!'"
Application Idea: Subscribe and consistently listen to the weekly "Jesus Christ, Our Savior and Redeemer Podcast" from BYU Speeches. This podcast is "[a] collection of BYU devotionals about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Speakers include prophets, apostles, professors, and historians, each bearing heartfelt testimony about the divinity of our Savior. Topics include the teachings of Christ, His life, ministry, and mission, and His Atonement."
4 - "When you need to 'hear Him' and know how to invite Jesus Christ into your life, consider following the steps President Nelson taught us about personal revelation: 'Find a quiet place where you can regularly go. Humble yourself before God. Pour out your heart to your Heavenly Father. Turn to Him for answers and for comfort. Pray in the name of Jesus Christ about your concerns, your fears, your weaknesses—yes, the very longings of your heart. And then listen! Write the thoughts that come to your mind. Record your feelings and follow through with actions that you are prompted to take. As you repeat this process day after day, month after month, year after year, you will 'grow into the principle of revelation.''"
Application Idea: In a recent podcast episode focused on Sister J. Anette Dennis' October 2025 address (Amazon Music | Apple Podcasts | Spotify | YouTube), our guest, Aubrey Grossen, shared two questions that she likes to ask in her daily appointment with Heavenly Father: 1) How do You feel about me? 2) What of me today? Ever since starting this practice, Aubrey shared that she has "been able to connect differently to heaven." She says: "I pray differently than I ever have. It's like listening prayers where I listen more than I speak and I just hear His love for me." Consider following Aubrey's example each day for the next seven days. Ask Heavenly Father the two questions that Aubrey asks, kneel quietly, write down "the thoughts that come to your mind" like President Nelson taught, and then "follow through with actions that you are prompted to take." After you have completed this for seven days, determine if you should make any changes to your process, and then start another seven-day trial period. And so on and so forth.

General Conference Applied S6 E51. What to Do If Your Life's Recipe Tastes. . . Off — Elder John D. Amos, "The Good News Recipe" - Amazon Music | Apple Podcasts | Spotify | YouTube. Clay and Mitch were joined by special guest, Kayla Shields. As Elder Amos' message centered on a recipe analogy with Jesus Christ being the "secret ingredient," we were thrilled to have Kayla share her faith and experiences cooking in the Lion House Pantry, a restaurant in Brigham Young's former Salt Lake City residence. We discuss Elder and Sister Amos' very impressive backgrounds in nuclear engineering and at NASA, how to find "recipes" in the scriptures, and Kayla shares a helpful story of what to do if something feels like it's gone wrong in your life plan. Bonus: our newsletter subscribers are receiving Sister Amos' famous jambalaya recipe!

Take Action
Clay's Application: I keep a notebook where I capture thoughts and direction like this. Often, I'll also journal about some of the more impactful promptings. However, I'm too often inconsistent and ineffective in following-through because I don't review my notebook often enough or make plans based on them as I should. In Elder Amos' analogy, I'm missing that key "ingredient." I'll arrange a time and place at least weekly to review what the Lord has directed me to do and plan my days so I can take action on it.
For fun, I also plan to make Sister Amos' jambalaya with some Tony's seasoning, as needed.
Mitch's Application: President Russell M. Nelson said that "good inspiration is based upon good information." I'll be honest, I don't feel like I have a very good grasp on what my "concerns, fears, weaknesses, and the very longings of [my] heart" are. This is probably a reflection on how little time I dedicate to journaling, being still, and waiting on my knees after I pray. So, while I certainly intend to more consistently follow these steps from President Nelson, I first want to note in my journal what my "concerns, fears, weaknesses, and the very longings of [my] heart" are. If I do this, I know that I'll have a better idea of what I should pray for.
