Hello, Doer of the word!

*We are looking for one Administrative Manager and one Media Manager who are each willing to volunteer five hours per week for General Conference Applied. If you or someone you know is willing to join us in a big way, please reply to this email and let us know.*

Do you or someone you know have a story related to a conference talk or connection to the speaker? Reply and let’s talk! We need all the help we can get to find podcast guests. We all have stories. Even if you don’t think you’re anyone special, your story may be exactly what another listener needs to hear!

Let's dive into the invitations from Elder Steven C. Barlow's October 2025 General Conference address, "'Lovest Thou Me?'."

Invitations

1 - "The [prodigal son's] elder brother's pride and self-righteousness kept him from embracing the joy of his brother's repentant return. We also may let opportunities pass us by without letting our loved ones know, through our words and actions, of our sincere love for them."

  • Application Idea: Whoever just popped into your mind, go tell them you love them. (Bonus points if you show that love in a way they want to be loved (see invitation #4).

2 - "When love is freely given and sincerely received, a virtuous cycle ensues with an increase of love between both the giver and the receiver."

  • Application Idea: Eliminate any conditions on an expression of love you give someone this week. Show love without expecting something in return. Journal about how that affects your relationship.

3 - "Like the prodigal son's elder brother, our focus is often centered on ourselves. We are so consumed with seeking evidence of God's love for us, and we become frustrated when we do not see it. But the beautiful paradox is that the more we are focused on showing our love for God, the more easily we recognize His love for us. Perhaps this is why the Savior responded to the question 'Which is the great commandment?' with this simple and important invitation: 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.'"

  • Application Idea: Try the same as #2, but with God: Eliminate any conditions on an expression of love you give God this week. Show love without expecting something in return. Journal about how that affects your relationship.

4 - "Sometimes the way we show our love to those we hold most dear is not necessarily the way they recognize love. This may be frustrating for both the giver and the receiver. It may be helpful to ask those we love how they recognize love expressed."

  • Application Idea: Create private, one-on-one moments with your family members or others you love and ask them what kinds of things help them feel most loved. Talk through some ways you can do this for them regularly. They might even offer to reciprocate, but don’t expect or require this. Focus on improving how you show them your love. For example, my wife appreciates acts of service (cleaning something in the house without being asked goes a long way) while my 6-year-old told me she feels loved when Mommy and Daddy play games with her.

5 - "There will never be enough time in a day, a week, a month, or a year to get done all we want or need to accomplish. Part of the test of mortality is to use the precious resource of time for what is most important for our eternal good and to let go of those things that are less important."

  • Application Idea: We all generally have pretty good intuition regarding what matters and what’s a waste of time. Sit somewhere quiet and write down the categories of things you spend time on. Prayerfully consider any needed adjustments. For extra credit, take your revised list and ideas to your spouse, parent, mentor, or other trusted person for their input.

6 - "[I]f we want to show our love for God, we should understand how He recognizes our love. Fortunately, He has clearly outlined several ways in the scriptures that we can show our love for Him:

[a.] We show our love to the Lord when we put Him above ... anyone, any activity, or anything that displaces Him from being the most important influence in our lives.

  • Application Idea: Pair this with the idea in #5. As you review how you spend your time, pay attention to which things on your list are displacing God as your most important influence.

[b.] We show our love for Heavenly Father when we serve, listen to, love, lift, or minister to His children. That service may be as simple as truly seeing others without judgment.

  • Application Idea: Have a conversation with a child, friend, spouse, or other loved one without intending to say much at all. Don’t make it weird, but say less than you normally would and ask probing questions to get the person talking deeper about how they feel. Your goal is to listen and understand better rather than waiting for a gap to take over the conversation with your own agenda.

  • Application Idea: Think seriously and openly about someone or some group of people you tend to be judgmental of. Ask Heavenly Father for help to see them with love and patience instead.

[c.] We also manifest our love for God by having a grateful heart. ... We show our love for God by acknowledging Him as the source of every good thing in our lives.

  • Application Idea: Set a specific day/time for gratitude prayers. Zero requests. God already knows what we need before we ask and we keep asking so often that there’s no way He could possibly forget! Just be grateful. Stay on your knees long enough to think of things outside the obvious to thank Him for. This is another good journal opportunity.

[d.] Another way we show our love for Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son is to choose to obey Them... a sincere and willing expression of love."

  • Application Idea: In our episode on Elder Cook, Josiah Boornazian mentioned one thing that made a big difference in gaining his testimony when he was investigating the church was choosing to suspend some early doubts and allow himself room to consider the ramifications if it were all true. Giving himself that space opened his heart for the Spirit to convince him it is in fact all true. That testimony then helped him overcome his previous doubts. We can do something similar if there’s a commandment our “natural man” self bristles at. Act to keep that commandment, not necessarily because you understand or accept it fully, but simply as a sincere and willing expression of your love for God. Over time, notice how your attitude toward the commandment changes.

Clay's Application: Like Elder Barlow and his business partner, Mitch and I often pray individually and together for the success of General Conference Applied. I express gratitude in my own prayers for the good things that are happening with the show and newsletter, but it's a relatively small percentage of each prayer, compared to my many petitions for blessings. My pre-recording prayers with Mitch are usually a plea for the Holy Ghost to guide our discussion and for the recording equipment to not blow up. I'll start adding more gratitude into all of my prayers for General Conference Applied.

Mitch's Application: I will ask my wife and my three children "how they [each] recognize love expressed" and then commit to better showing them love in that way. Additionally, I would like to join with Clay in offering a prayer of gratitude following each podcast recording. Knowing that each podcast episode will be followed by a prayer of gratitude will prompt me to look for good things during each episode for which I can express gratitude.

Reply to this email and tell us how you'll take action on one of these invitations and whether we can share your response in our newsletter, podcast, and/or on social media.

Thanks for joining us in becoming a "Doer of the word!" Please help others do the same by sharing this newsletter with them.
