1 invitation from general conference

Are we selective, or exclusive, in determining who deserves our love, or do we extend Christlike love to all with whom we associate? The Lord asked, "If ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others?" To Him, all people upon this earth are our neighbors—there are no strangers or outcasts, only brothers and sisters. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that "a man filled with the love of God, is not content with blessing his family alone, but ranges through the whole world, anxious to bless the whole human race."

+ a recent quote from an apostle

In the doctrine of the Church, we encourage you to strengthen your faith and your spiritual, social, physical, and intellectual growth. When I speak of faith, I am speaking of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. This is a major purpose of everything we do. …

The challenge is to find the time for spiritual growth while acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in a very competitive world.

Faith and acquiring skills and knowledge require equal effort and commitment. We cannot expect to have faith at the center of our lives if all our efforts are expended on skills, knowledge, making money, or other pursuits.

Some of us want faith to be at the center of our lives, but it does not get our attention; it is a small portion of our efforts.

1 teaching from the prophet

Many Christians have voluntarily given sacrifices motivated by faith in Christ and the desire to serve Him. Some have chosen to devote their entire adult lives to the service of the Master. This noble group includes those in the religious orders of the Catholic Church and those who have given lifelong service as Christian missionaries in various Protestant faiths. Their examples are challenging and inspiring, but most believers in Christ are neither expected nor able to devote their entire lives to religious service.

For most followers of Christ, our sacrifices involve what we can do on a day-to-day basis in our ordinary personal lives. In that experience I know of no group whose members make more sacrifices than Latter-day Saints. Their sacrifices—your sacrifices, my brothers and sisters—stand in contrast to the familiar worldly quests for personal fulfillment.
